Why it matters internationally

Prof. Jürgen Hartmann’s Sensorik laboratory at THWS works on radiometry, thermometry and opto-thermal characterisation of materials at high temperature. With the Institute of Digital Engineering, the group has published a calibrated MWIR thermography system for absolute temperature measurement in laser powder bed fusion over 500–1500 K, which depends on separately measured emissivity of the processed material. THWS was a partner in the European metrology project Hi-TRACE on reference equipment for emissivity above 1500 °C. Much of the high-temperature emissivity measurement behind this work is done with CAE Würzburg, where Hartmann is also affiliated.

Methodology: Pixel-wise radiometric calibration of an MWIR thermography system against a blackbody cavity and reference pyrometer, used through the scan-head optical path of a laser powder bed fusion research platform; emissivity of the resolidified material, measured separately at high temperature, converts radiance to true temperature.
