Why it matters internationally

BAM’s Division 8.3 Thermographic Methods develops contactless thermographic testing, with in-situ monitoring of additive manufacturing as a named work area. It runs SAMMIE, an open-architecture laser powder bed fusion testbed instrumented with thermographic and optical sensors, on which it has demonstrated hyperspectral SWIR measurement of absolute melt-pool temperatures. Its published work treats the unknown, changing emissivity of metal surfaces as the key obstacle to quantitative in-situ thermography, and addresses it with spectral directional emissivity measurements (carried out with CAE Würzburg) and multispectral methods.

Scope of activity

Application domains: in-situ monitoring and quality assurance in laser powder bed fusion of metals · in-situ defect detection by active laser thermography · thermographic non-destructive testing.
